The truck division of Daimler AG reported stronger financial results for the first quarter, led by continued sales growth in the North American market.

Daimler, based in Stuttgart, Germany, said its global truck division’s operating income climbed 38% to 472 million euros (about $518 million) from 341 million euros ($374 million) in the same period last year. Revenue grew 18% to 8.4 billion euros.

Daimler Trucks, which sells Freightliner and Western Star models in North America, said first-quarter sales in the region jumped 18% to 40,844 units, including a 17% gain to 35,735 units in the United States. Worldwide sales rose 4% to 112,424 trucks.

“The ongoing strength of the economy in the Nafta region caused a further increase in demand for trucks there,” the manufacturer said in its April 28 report.

Daimler said its first-quarter share of the total North American Class 8 market increased to 41.5% from 37.7% a year earlier, and Classes 6-7 market share in the region declined to 41.1% from 45.3%.
