FedEx Corp announced that as of Feb. 1, Dave Bronczek will assume the posts of president and chief operating officer.

Bronczek, 62, will also assume the role of president, a title currently held by Fred Smith, FedEx said. Smith will remain chairman and CEO. Bronczek, who has served as chief of the FedEx Express air cargo unit since 2000, will be responsible for marketing, sales, and all FedEx operating companies..

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

The subject of a successor for 72-year-old Smith, who founded Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx in 1971 and also serves as chairman, has been the focus of speculation for years. In 2015, FedEx’s board raised the mandatory retirement age for company directors to 75 from 72, a step that allowed Smith to stay on longer.

David Cunningham will succeed Bronczek as president and CEO of FedEx Express. He previously served as regional president of the Asia Pacific Region and most recently as executive vice president and COO. In his new position, Cunningham will be responsible for the leadership and direction of the FedEx Express group, which includes FedEx Express and TNT.
