Landstar System Inc.’s board of directors has appointed James Gattoni as CEO, succeeding Henry Gerkens, who will continue to serve as executive chairman until May 2015.

Gattoni will take over his new post effective Dec. 29, and Gerkins will step down as executive chairman during the company’s annual shareholder meeting.

“I am honored to follow in Henry’s footsteps and to further build on the company’s momentum,” Gattoni said in a statement. “It is my privilege to guide Landstar into the future as we write the next chapters in Landstar’s success story.”

Gattoni joined the Jacksonville, Florida-based company in 1995 and quickly emerged as a key player on the management team, according to Landstar.

“His financial expertise and commitment to excellence in customer service will serve the company and its shareholders well into the future. Jim’s promotion is a testament to Landstar’s ongoing succession planning process and is well-deserved. The board is delighted he will succeed Henry,” Diana Murphy, lead independent director, said in a statement.

“Jim has proven time and time again that he is a solutions-oriented leader,” Gerkens said in a statement. “He understands the company’s safety first culture and is well-respected within the organization.”

Landstar ranks No. 10 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
