I was not the least bit surprised by news accounts indicating that the key tip to capturing the alleged suspects in the sniper spree in our nation’s capital came from a truck driver. I have been proud that during my 25 years in the transportation industry, I have been associated with the many honorable, hardworking men and women who comprise the nation’s truck-driving army.

These individuals often are invisible to the average American in our day-to-day world. Sadly, truck drivers usually are only recognized when they make a mistake. Seldom are they appreciated for the vital day-to-day role they play in keeping America’s economy moving — delivering the many goods that daily improve our lives and that we have come to expect to be on the shelves at our market or in the mall. Truck drivers don’t crave public recognition of their work, but they deserve it.

In a time when America, sadly, faces growing threats from unknown factions and individuals from both within and outside our borders, I am very comforted by the fact that an army of vigilant, hard-working, mostly invisible men and women truckers are on the job daily, contributing importantly to our quality of life and, increasingly, safeguarding it as well.
