GM Expanding Flint Assembly Plant

  • Write a Letter To The Editor

General Motors Co. will invest more than $21 million in its Flint Assembly plant to build the 2011 Chevrolet light-duty crew cab truck, the Associated Press reported.

Detroit-based GM said in a statement the renovations and new machinery will make the plant more flexible and allow heavy- and light-duty trucks to be built on the same line.

GM Flint Assembly is the company's sole producer of the company’s Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks.

This is good news for the Flint facility after GM halted production of its medium-duty commercial trucks July 31. The company has pulled out of the medium-duty commercial truck business after failing for four years to find a buyer.

Construction at Flint Assembly is set to start in the fourth quarter, and production is to begin in July. The plant now employs 1,767 hourly and salaried workers on two shifts, AP said.

GM also announced separately that it will add a third shift to three plants as the automaker shifts production from plants that will be closed or idled.

The increased production at plants in Fairfax, Kan.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Delta Township, Mich., will restore 2,400 jobs to workers who were previous laid off at the plants, the company said.
