Toyota Adds Workers to Texas Plant

Toyota Motor Corp. said it is hiring 850 workers at its San Antonio truck plant, which currently builds Tundra pickups, to add Tacoma production to the facility, Bloomberg reported.

About one hundred employees have already been added, with the rest slated to start work by year’s end, Toyota spokesman Mike Goss said. With the additions, total employment at the plant will rise to 2,600.

Toyota is spending about $100 million to modify the plant to handle Tacoma production.

The shift is being made in the wake of the closing of Fremont, Calif. factory Toyota jointly owned with General Motors, Bloomberg said.  Toyota announced this summer that it would stop getting vehicles from New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., which the company operated jointly with GM for 25 years. GM abandoned the venture in the wake of its emergence from bankruptcy earlier this year, and Toyota decided the facility was too costly to maintain alone, Bloomberg said.
