NAFTA Surface Trade Declines in August

Surface transportation trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico fell 24.9% in August from a year earlier, the Department of Transportation said Thursday.

Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners fell to $53 billion, while surface trade rose 5.3% in August from July, DOT said in its monthly report.

Total truck imports to the United States fell 19.8% to $18.4 billion from a year earlier, while exports fell 16.1% to $20.1 billion.

Rail imports plunged 35.4% to $5.4 billion, while exports fell 35.7% to $3.1 billion. Pipeline imports fell 49.3% to $4.1 billion, while exports declined 59.9% to $147 million.



U.S.-Canada trade fell 29.6% to $32.9 billion. The value of truck imports to the U.S. fell 26.1% and the value of truck exports fell 17%.

U.S.-Mexico trade fell 16.2% to $21.3 billion. The value of truck imports fell 13.5% and the value of truck exports fell 14.7%.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
