Orders for Class 8 trucks fell in September to 19,600 vehicles, down 3% from a month earlier and 21% fewer year-over-year, ACT Research said based on preliminary numbers.

Classes 5-7 orders climbed to 21,100, rising 18% above August and 8% from year-ago September, ACT said.

Jamie Cook, an analyst with the investment firm Credit Suisse, said in a report that the preliminary Class 8 truck orders were “about in line with expectations.”

Research firm FTR had slightly different preliminary month-over-month numbers for heavy-duty truck orders.

FTR said there were 19,460 Class 8 orders, down 4% from August.

FTR also said the September order activity met expectations, albeit with a higher anticipated cancellation rate for the second month in a row.
