Suddath Strikes Deal to Acquire The Secor Group

The Suddath Cos., one of the nation’s largest household goods movers, has acquired The Secor Group, a moving and storage firm in Washington, D.C., that has been in business for 125 years.

Although terms were not disclosed, Suddath officials said the transaction is the largest acquisition to date for the Jacksonville, Florida-based company, which ranks No. 58 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada, with revenue of $500 million in 2014. Suddath also ranks No. 4 on the TT list of largest carriers in the household goods/commercial delivery sector.

“Joining forces makes tremendous business sense,” Suddath CEO Michael Brannigan said in a statement Nov. 18.

“We are both history-rich, proudly rooted organizations that take moving personally each and every day whether it’s people, products or businesses.”



Secor Group CEO Chuck Lawrence said the combined portfolio of services “will collectively equip us to better meet the ever-changing needs of clients around the world.”

Founded in 1890 as Security Storage Co. of Washington, Secor Group is one of the oldest companies operating in the District of Columbia. The company has helped a number of presidents, including Barack Obama, move into and out of the White House Its former headquarters at 1501 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W. was represented on the back of $10 bills for several decades starting in the 1920s.

Suddath and Secor were founding members of Atlas Van Lines and Allied Van Lines and helped to establish an international network of moving and storage companies in the 1950s.

Suddath and Secor are affiliates of UniGroup Inc., a holding company for United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit and the largest carrier in the household goods sector.
