USA Truck reported second-quarter net income of $2.5 million, or 31 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $2.8 million, or a minus 35 cents a share loss, in the second quarter of 2017. Operating revenue came in at $135.4 million, up more than 23% from $107.4 million a year ago.
The Van Buren, Ark.-based company’s trucking segment had revenue of $85.6 million, up nearly 20% from $71.5 million a year ago. Operating income turned the corner to a $2.2 million profit from a $4.8 million loss a year ago. The base revenue per loaded mile increased 22% to $2.145 from $1.762.
The operating ratio, a key metric that shows a company’s efficiency, improved to 97.1 from 107. The average number of available tractors fell to 1,638 from 1,672, while the base revenue per available tractors rose to $3,449 from $2,885, an increase of nearly 20%.
The logistics division reported operating revenue of $49.8 million, a 39% rise from $35.8 million. Operating income rose to $2.2 million from $1.9 million, a 15% increase.
