ASHINGTON — American Trucking Associations and representatives of trucking companies and other associations asked the Environmental Protection Agency to reject a California rule requiring retrofitting refrigeration units on model-year 2001 and older trucks to meet emission standards.

ATA testified at a hearing here Jan. 23 that the California Air Resources Board had not taken into full consideration how much it would cost to upgrade trucks with the new technology and had underestimated the number of trucks that would be affected.

“We believe that this will affect 330,000 trucks nationwide” that do some, but not all of their business in the state of California, “and not the 7,500 that CARB says it will affect,” said Robert Digges, general counsel for ATA.
