ridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC said June 2 it will spend about $44 million to build a 1-million-square-foot distribution center at the Port of Jacksonville, Fla.

Company spokeswoman Chris Karbowiak told Transport Topics that construction will be completed by mid-2007. She said the tire maker plans to use the center to distribute about 125,000 heavy-duty truck tires and another 1.2 million automotive tires a year throughout the Southeast.

“This is a great location for us to consolidate our Southeastern distribution because it is a deepwater port and is at the confluence of I-10 and I-95,” Karbowiak told TT.
