EPA's 'Minimal Penalties' Deadline Approaching For Tank Violators

The Dec. 22 deadline to comply with stiffer regulations on maintaining underground storage tanks has come and gone. However, the Environmental Protection Agency has been somewhat softhearted with businesses and agencies that have not complied.

Now, their time is almost up. Violators have until Feb. 12 to request EPA’s "minimal penalties" offer, according to the federal agency.

A letter was sent to various trade associations alerting them that this month was the cutoff date for tank owners to come clean with the federal agency on whether they met the tighter standards, said Sammy Ng of the division of underground storage tanks at EPA.
