Ergo Guidelines Called 'Toothless'

Sen. Breaux Introduces a 'Mandate' Proposal
WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats attacked the Bush administration's voluntary guidelines for reducing musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace and endorsed legislation to require the Labor Department to issue ergonomics regulations instead.

Labor Secretary Elaine Chao outlined the administration’s plan during a hearing called by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Kennedy described the guideline approach as “toothless” because “most corporations will simply ignore” the voluntary approach and allow ergonomic injuries to occur.
