Fatigue Study to Highlight Meeting

The latest research into fatigue monitoring technology was being examined during a conference April 26 and 27 in Herndon, Va.

The Federal Highway Administration’s Motor Carrier and Highway Safety business unit and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Vehicle Safety Research are sponsoring the meeting, which will focus on how the measurement of eye droop can be used to detect fatigue.

A focus of the conference will be the presentation of a study by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on the validity of using a measurement known as PERCLOS to spot fatigue.

PERCLOS is the percentage of time eyelids are closed 80% or more. It can be measured by using in-truck cameras.

In addition to the PERCLOS study results, other alertness monitoring systems will be discussed as well as how in-vehicle alertness monitoring systems can be introduced so they will be successfully accepted by the industry.
