Fleets Unhappy With Service From Rail Intermodal Providers

IAMI — Truck-rail intermodal, which many industry analysts have cited as a good way to move freight during the current capacity crunch, is struggling to achieve timely service levels, according to several intermodal customers and service providers.

At an investors conference here recently, UPS Inc., the largest user of intermodal, and YRC Worldwide said they were not happy with service levels. UPS and YRC are two of North America’s three largest trucking companies.

Separately, Douglas Duncan, FedEx Freight’s chief executive officer, told Transport Topics his company never uses rail because the service is too slow to ensure packages are delivered in time to meet FedEx’s money-back guarantee.
