FMCSA to Unveil Hours Plan

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it would announce new rules governing commercial drivers' hours of service this week, the agency's second attempt in three years to revise the 64-year-old regulations.

Changes are expected in the number of hours that a driver can legally operate his or her vehicle after eight hours off and in the total length of the driver’s workday.

Government and industry sources said FMCSA wanted to increase the drive time to 11 hours from 10 and reduce the workday to 14 hours from 15.



FMCSA would not confirm the makeup of the new rules, yet word of the proposal drew positive reaction from one industry official.
