GAO Suggests Tax Increases for Trucking

WASHINGTON — The General Accounting Office told Congress last week that it could raise truck taxes or authorize more toll roads to help boost transportation infrastructure investment and the Highway Trust Fund.

JayEtta Z. Hecker, the GAO's director of physical infrastructure issues, offered those and other ideas in testimony at a May 9 hearing before the Senate Finance Committee.

She also suggested putting in place a federal weight-distance tax on trucking, to replace several other types of existing taxes on trucking and its equipment.

The GAO is a nonpartisan auditing arm of Congress that investigates issues at the request of lawmakers and makes recommendations.
