Industry Nears Transponder Standard

A single standard for dedicated short-range radio communications, now in final stages of approval by a national board, could bring compatibility to electronic weigh-station bypass and toll-collection services, according to the committee’s chairman. It also will enable truckers to connect to the Internet and other sources of information and entertainment through their in-cab transponders, he said.

A panel of the American Society for Testing and Materials, which writes standards for products, systems and services, voted Aug. 24 to adopt a technical standard designed to make all transponder-based communications universal in the United States.

It is a new version of an existing standard of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers that has been altered slightly for on-road applications.
