OS ANGELES — A task force appointed by Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn unveiled a 73-point pollution control initiative Dec. 29, aimed at bringing emissions from the Port of Los Angeles down to 2001 levels.

The plan, which combines both ongoing efforts with some yet to be introduced, focuses on curbing emissions from freight transportation sources. The 28-member group said the biggest sources of air pollution in Southern California are the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The initiative includes proposals to curb emissions from ocean-going ships that bring freight into and out of the port, convert the rail links from the port to electric power, and continue a program to replace older trucks serving the port with lower-emission models built in 2004 or later.
