Montana to Issue Oversize Permits Online
The Montana Department of Transportation is about to go online with a system that automatically approves size and weight permits, which truckers may print out from their own computers 24-hours a day. It also serves as a prototype that the contractor hopes to sell to other states.
The technology was built by Lockheed Martin IMS of Phoenix, and is part of a wave of electronic regulatory compliance tools the state plans to roll out in the future.
Galt joined MMCA in May after 11 years as head of MDOT’s Motor Carrier Services Division, where he was closely involved in the development of the permitting system.For more than a year, state employees have been using a version of the automatic size and weight permitting program that runs on an in-house network. MDOT’s Motor Carrier Services Division is now testing an Internet-based version. On Sept. 11, carriers will gain access to the system for a test. If all goes well, the system will be open to the trucking public by October, according to MDOT.

“I don’t know of anybody else who has a system like this,” said Dave Galt, executive vice president of the Montana Motor Carriers Association. “There are states where you can apply online, but the permits still have to be processed manually.”
