NTSB to Survey Intrastate Carriers

The National Transportation Safety Board is planning to survey the performance of intrastate motor carriers and the impact they have on transportation safety.

In the Dec. 30 Federal Register, the agency proposed sending 3000 questionnaires to intrastate carriers in an effort to compile data.

lthough interstate commerce operations are regulated by the federal government, intrastate commerce is covered by each individual state. The agency said the limited data available on intrastate operations makes it impossible to identify their safety impact.

Truck loads are considered either interstate or intrastate commerce, based on the destination of the cargo being transported. Currently, intrastate regulations vary from one state to another.
