Penske Sells 310 Trucks Online

Penske Truck Leasing sold 310 used trucks for $3.6 million in an Aug. 23-31 online sale. The sale was administered by TradeOut.com, a firm that sells goods from a number of industries online.

The results of the sale left TradeOut officials, who claimed more than 60 individual buyers, giddy about their future. They said that during the course of the sale, they got calls from several companies that inquired about running similar sales on their site.

Tom Janowicz, Penske’s general manager for e-business, was also pleased about the sale results. The company utilized the online event, which was not an auction because the price of each truck on the block was preset, to sell used rental trucks that had been used for moving, ranging in size from 10 to 25 feet.

Janowicz said the more than 2,000 trucks that did not sell during the nine-day sale would be listed on TradeOut’s Web site at a higher price. The trucks also could be sold by Penske’s regional sales force or traded back in to truck dealers.
