Sales Remain Sharply Below Year-Earlier Levels

Sales of the big-rig Class 8 trucks continued to slump in October, as manufacturers reported total sales 18.4% below those of October 2000 and year-to-date sales 35.9% below the previous year.

However, October sales were sharply up from September in virtually all classes. Truck sales were among the many types of commercial activity that slowed significantly in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Heavy-duty truck sales increased in October to 11,797 after a dismal September in which sales tumbled to 9,667.
