Maine lawmakers late last month became the first in the nation to seek repeal of a federal law tightening identification requirements for drivers’ licenses, Reuters reported.State lawmakers passed a resolution urging repeal of the Real ID Act, which would create a national digital identification system by 2008, Reuters said. They said the law would cost the state about $185 million, while failing to boost security and would put people at greater risk of identity theft, Reuters reported. The law would cost states more than $11 billion, cumulatively, to enforce, according to a report released in September. Traffic deaths dropped substantially in 16 states last year, reflecting stepped-up enforcement and education campaigns, USA Today reported.Highway fatalities fell by at least 5% in those 16 states, while in nine others, deaths rose by at least that much, based on an analysis by the paper of states’ road safety statistics. Texas and Georgia reported preliminary declines of more than 5%, but traffic safety agencies in those states expect final totals to rise significantly, the paper reported.
