Trucking Training Urged for Native Americans

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell wants to reduce the unemployment rate among Native Americans.

en. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), the only Senate member licensed to drive a commercial motor vehicle, has introduced legislation to provide Native Americans with training and financial assistance to become truck drivers.

Campbell’s bill, the Native American Commercial Driving Training and Technical Assistance Act, is aimed at reducing the 43% unemployment rate that exists in Native American communities by helping provide trucking companies with needed drivers.



“Economic development is the key to many of the social and economic ills that plague Indian and Alaska Native communities,” he said as he introduced the bill Aug. 2.
