ACT For-Hire Trucking Index Jumps 20 Points
ACT Research Co. reported its for-hire trucking index in July rose for the seventh consecutive month to 57.1, up 20 points from a year earlier.
Among fleet respondents, 6% reported having significant freight gains, 49% had modest increases, 19% were flat, 21% had modest decreases and the remaining 5% of carriers saw significant decreases, according to Columbus, Ind.-based ACT.
“Even after being [seasonally] adjusted, July’s index had its third best reading over the last 12 months and marks the third consecutive month with a reading over 60,” ACT president Kenny Vieth said in a statement.
The capacity index for July was 53.8 points, rising modestly above June’s reading of 52.0, ACT reported.
“Like the volume index, seasonal adjustment raises the capacity reading to the highest level since the same month in 2015,” Vieth noted. “The rise is in line with stronger tractor retail sales witnessed in recent months.”
