Groundbreaking of Atlanta-based Agile Cold Storage’s $61 million warehouse, located about 30 miles southeast of Dallas, was welcomed by local officials from Kaufman, Texas. The facility will bring 70 jobs to the area.

“This project affirms Kaufman’s competitive location for industry, especially in the food and beverage sector,” Mayor Jeff Jordan said. “Agile’s decision to locate in Kaufman brings the largest industrial capital investment in our city’s history. We welcome them to our community and look forward to a great relationship with them as corporate citizens.”

The 122,949-square-foot, multi-temperature facility is expected to open by the end of this year following a Jan. 23 groundbreaking ceremony.

“We have been looking for the right time and place to make an investment in Texas since starting the company five years ago and are excited to announce our project in Kaufman,” said Don Schoenl, Agile president, CEO and co-founder. “This project would not be possible without the support of our local food manufacturing partners, the city of Kaufman and the Kaufman Economic Development Corp. We appreciate everyone’s support and look forward to hiring our team members this fall.”

KEDC officials have identified warehouse distribution and cold storage facilities as ideal businesses to open in the city, which sits between U.S. Route 175 and Texas state Highway 34. More than 125,000 residents live in the county.

Among the benefits offered to entice new companies to the area are tax incentive programs, a five-year property tax refund and a sales tax reimbursement. KEDC also can offer grants for infrastructure, site improvements, buildings and equipment. Other incentives can include gifted land, below market cost for land, job training, and low-interest and forgivable loans.

“Our community welcomes Agile’s investment in their state-of-the-art facility that will provide good-paying jobs for our citizens,” said Charles Gillenwater, KEDC board president. “It’s major investments like these that provide the revenue our community needs to meet the demands of our significant growth. This development will help make Kaufman an even better place to live, work and do business.”

Agile, which invests in temperature-controlled warehouses throughout North America, indicated the 70 jobs in Kaufman will support the company’s operations for its domestic market as well as imports and exports. The privately held company is owned by management along with Dallas-headquartered ERA Capital Partners and Continental Grain Co.

“Agile’s experienced management team and best practices will allow for reliable, efficient and flexible receiving, storage, import/export, distribution and shipping of its customers’ products,” a company announcement stated. “The Kaufman facility will include frozen, refrigerated and deep-freeze temperature zones to ensure products are maintained at the highest levels of quality in accordance with industry specifications and government regulations.”

In November, Agile Cold Storage broke ground on a $60.5 million, 132,865-square-foot warehouse in New York that is expected to create 50 jobs. In October, the company opened its fifth facility, which was a 162,500-square-foot warehouse in Delaware meant to handle fresh, refrigerated and frozen foods and more frequent deliveries in mid-Atlantic and Northeastern markets.
