Ambassador Bridge Truck Traffic Slips in April

Truck traffic crossing the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, slipped 5.5% in April from a year ago, the company that runs the bridge said Wednesday.

Truck trips totaled 216,469 for the month, compared with 229,075 a year ago, the Detroit International Bridge Co. said in a statement.

Total traffic, including automobiles, fell 1% in April.

Crossings were up 32% from the recession-level 163,805 of two years ago, but despite that increase, truck traffic is 31% below the pre-9/11 level of 315,227 crossings in the year 2000.

The bridge’s owners oppose a plan, backed by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, to build a second crossing between the United States and Canada.

Its release said that “notwithstanding the rhetoric by proponents of [a new bridge,] truck traffic continues to fall.”
