American Axle to Produce Commercial Truck Parts

American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings will expand a factory in Michigan to build more parts for large commercial trucks, reducing its reliance on General Motors Corp. for business, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The Three Rivers, Mich., plant will expand to make axles and related parts for the $9 billion annual market, Bloomberg said, citing Chief Financial Officer Michael Simonte.

American Axle’s plans reflect its strategy of depending less on GM, which accounted for 78% of its revenue last year.

American Axle’s second-quarter sales fell 46%, in part because of declining demand for GM large pickups and sport-utility vehicles for which it makes components.

United Auto Workers at American Axle ended a three-month strike against the supplier in May.
