Arkansas Group Bucks Trend, Wants 'Black Boxes' for Hours

In-truck computers to monitor driver hours were endorsed by some of the largest trucking companies in the country when the Arkansas Trucking Association voted last week to support the proposed federal mandate for “black boxes” on trucks.

The state group backed the idea of requiring the technology only if devices can be created to meet the needs of all trucking fleets.

The Department of Transportation’s proposal for revising hours-of-service regulations includes use of electronic recorders to replace handwritten logbooks for long-haul and regional truck drivers.
