ATA’s board of directors renewed its commitment to the ongoing restructuring of trucking’s largest trade group that it authorized in August 1998. It extended the employment contract of President Walter B. McCormick Jr. through 2002 and urged ATA’s 13 conferences and affiliated national organizations to decide on their future relationship with ATA.

At the meeting’s Nov. 3 closing session, Lee P. Shaffer, ATA’s new chairman, led the audience in a standing ovation for McCormick and ATA’s staff. John E. Wren, ATA’s outgoing chairman, also praised McCormick in remarks prepared for delivery. Wren was unable to address the audience because of an illness in the family.

Despite media reports of high staff turnover and a hefty budget deficit, ATA’s board also approved resolutions directing the association to “continue the president’s successful efforts to fully implement the ATA strategic plan by the end of 2000, effectively manage ATA financial resources and complete the internal ATA restructuring.”
