ATA’s Approach in Restructuring Has Yielded Success Elsewhere

When A. Maurice Myers became chief executive officer of bankrupt America West Airlines in January 1994, he turned to the New York-based Novations Group for help in bringing the airline out of Chapter 11 in just six months.

Shortly after taking over Yellow Corp. in March 1996, Myers again brought in the corporate restructuring consultant to help trim the less-than-truckload carrier’s budget.

And when Thomas J. Donohue, the longtime president of American Trucking Associations, announced his departure in June 1997, Myers suggested the association bring in Novations to reorganize the nation’s largest trucking group.

“When I arrived at Yellow, it was in a situation similar to what ATA had found itself in,” Myers said. “The world we had operated in had changed, and both we and ATA needed to change. We had to figure out how to operate more effectively and be more competitive.”
