Truck parking is a major headache for the industry. Last year, parking ranked fifth on The American Transportation Research Institute’s list of critical issues.

In response, ATRI launched on March 21 what it believes is the first detailed survey of truck parking with real-world reporting from drivers. The organization will ask drivers to log for 14 days where they park, how long they park, how long it takes to find parking, why they picked that spot and other questions for both meal and rest breaks and for their mandatory 10-hour breaks.

According to ATRI, the data collected in the diaries will build on existing knowledge of truck parking shortages by providing qualitative information on driver parking behavior as well as how parking challenges impact productivity.

“We all talk about how tough it is to find truck parking; ATRI is giving us the chance to document the issues on a national scale so that solutions can be identified and acted on,” said Werner Enterprises driver David Green, who also is an America’s Road Team captain for American Trucking Associations.

Interested drivers can visit ATRI’s website to complete a prequalifying survey or they can visit ATRI’s booth at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky, from March 31 to April 2. Selected drivers will be contacted by e-mail to obtain the diary. The first 100 participants to return their completed diaries will receive $50 VISA gift cards.

ATRI President Rebecca Brewster hopes that the survey can be completed by Memorial Day.
