Averitt Plans Jacksonville Warehouse Complex
Averitt Express Inc. has filed plans to build a 60,400-square-foot cross-dock facility and 9,200-square-foot maintenance facility in West Jacksonville, Fla.
The current facility has 17,000 square feet and 53 trailer doors.
Construction manager and contractor D.F. Chase Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., and civil engineering firm Prosser Inc. submitted plans for a combined facility that will sit on 21 acres of Averitt-owned property at 7200 Commonwealth Ave.
“The Jacksonville market is very important to Averitt and our shippers,” spokesman Joseph Greek told Transport Topics. “We’ve been at the current facility for several years now, and have reached a point where the growing freight volume and demand for capacity has spurred the need to expand our operations in Jacksonville by moving into a larger facility.”
He said the move will improve Averitt’s ability to serve domestic and international distribution to customers locally and nationwide.
With 49 tractor spaces and 162 trailer spaces, the new space will allow the company to better serve the burgeoning market at the Port of Jacksonville.
“Cargo growth at the Port of Jacksonville has factored into our need for a larger facility and more associates,” Greek said. “Many of our shippers utilize our import-export services. This includes drayage of containers and transloading freight between containers and truck trailers.”
There will be a truck terminal and employee parking, too. The company has 82 associates at its location in Jacksonville at 723 Scotia Road and plans are to hire more for the new facility.
“We can expect that number to reach upwards of 100 with room to grow,” Greek said.
