Biden, Foxx Tout TIGER Grant at Port of Baltimore
Vice President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx visited the Port of Baltimore to speak about a $10 million grant the Department of Transportation has awarded the port for projects that Foxx said “are the best argument for increased investments in transportation.”
The grant will go toward projects to expand a busy terminal at the port and deepen a major navigational channel, Foxx said in a Sept. 10 post on his blog about the previous day’s visit.
“Moving cargo is the lifeblood of our economy,” he said. “These improvements will increase efficiency at the port, reduce shipping costs for auto exporters, and allow shippers to take advantage of the new, larger container ships that will soon be coming through the expanded Panama Canal.”
Foxx announced the grant the previous week as part of the Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery program, a funding competition for surface transportation projects. In this year’s grant round, DOT said it will give $474 million to 52 transportation projects in 32 states.
Foxx has written about other TIGER projects in his blog in recent days. Obama administration officials recently touted other TIGER projects, including a highway and bridge improvement project near Lexington, Va., and a bus traffic improvement system in Nashville, Tenn.
