BNSF’s First-Quarter Income Gains 30%

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. said Tuesday its first-quarter profit rose 30% to $455 million, or $1.30 a share, from $349 million, or 96 cents, a year earlier.

The western freight railroad’s freight revenue rose 17% to $4.14 billion, BNSF said in a statement.

Consumer products revenue, which include intermodal, rose 5% to $1.38 billion. Agricultural revenue rose 38% to $866 million and coal revenue rose 26% to $954 million.

Each of BNSF’s business units benefited from increased fuel surcharges driven by higher fuel prices, the company said.
