Bomb Threat Closes Detroit-Windsor Tunnel

The Detroit-Windsor tunnel connecting the U.S. and Canada was scheduled to reopen late Thursday after being closed for about four hours due to a bomb threat, news services reported.

Police received a call saying there was a bomb in or near the tunnel and it was soon evacuated, CNN said.

Traffic was diverted to the Ambassador Bridge, where about 8,500 heavy-duty trucks make the crossing daily because the tunnel is too small for big rigs.

Only low-profile trucks are allowed in the tunnel because it has too tight a turn and low clearance, said Gregg Ward, president of the Detroit River Ferry, which can take eight trucks per crossing.

U.S. and Canadian officials recently approved a new river crossing to compete with the Ambassador Bridge, which is privately owned.

“We need a new crossing for purposes of redundancy and resiliency,” Ward told Transport Topics.
