Truck components manufacturer BorgWarner Inc. announced a new two-speed cooling fan drive for severe service and vocational applications.

BorgWarner said the DuroSpeed fan drive, designed for applications such as construction and municipal waste collection, “significantly reduces fan engagements,” producing greater reliability and less noise.

“Dump trucks, refuse haulers and other vocational applications experience severe service and have very different cooling needs than linehaul trucks,” said Daniel Paterra, president and general manager for BorgWarner Thermal Systems in a March 19 announcement. He said the fan drive’s design enables the clutch to run 70 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than competitors' models, increasing bearing and liner durability.

Because fan drives that simply turn on and off must continually engage and disengage, engine temperatures rise quickly, causing the clutch to engage repeatedly. BorgWarner said its DuroSpeed unit has a higher disengaged fan speed that prevents engine temperatures from rising too quickly, allowing for fewer engagements and disengagements.

The company said the fan will be supplied beginning in May and can be easily retrofitted.
