Brokers’ Group Enjoys Growth Counter to Trend

At a time when transportation trade groups are struggling to retain membership, the Transportation Intermediaries Association is undergoing a growth spurt.

The organization, which represents third-party transportation service providers, saw an 18.5% increase in membership and a 90% retention rate for the first 11 months of 1999. Of the 680 members, about half of them own or operate trucks.

Trade groups such as American Trucking Associations and the National Private Truck Council have seen their membership decline in recent years, while the National Industrial Transportation League’s numbers have remained stable.

ATA is actively recruiting members following a 1998 restructuring and changes in its dues structure. NPTC is also restructuring and plans a membership campaign. The NITL plans increased emphasis on member services to increase its numbers.
