This week is projected to be the busiest of the year for the U.S. Postal Service and private shipping firms, news reports and shipping companies said.

Monday may be the busiest shipping day of the year, with mountains of mail and packages passing through the hands of the U.S. Postal Service and firms like UPS Inc., FedEx Corp. and DHL, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Postal Service expects nearly 1 billion cards, letters and packages to be mailed Monday, including 275 million cards and letters, which compares with 82 million on an average day.

FedEx expects to handle 11.3 million packages, the most ever processed by its network in a single day, the Times reported. FedEx moves about 7 million packages on an average day.

UPS said in a statement that Wednesday will be the busiest day for deliveries of all packages, and Friday will be the busiest day for deliveries of its air express packages. UPS said it will deliver 5.6 million air packages Friday globally — more than two-and-a-half times its normal daily volume.

DHL — which calls Monday “Super Monday” because of its high volume — expects a 50% increase over its average daily volume during the first three quarters of this year, as it will deliver approximately 2.5 million packages and pick up 2.3 million packages across the United States.

UPS, FedEx and DHL are ranked No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
