New cable barriers in Interstate 85 in Georgia are preventing deaths from highway cross-over wrecks, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.
In May, newly installed cable barriers in the median of I-85 stopped four cross-over crashes in Franklin and Hart counties, preventing cross-overs, the paper said.
A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Transportation said cables may not prevent all cross-overs, especially if vehicles go airborne, but that they help, the Journal-Constitution said.
The 4-foot barriers have woven horizontal cables supported with vertical steel posts and concrete foundations, the paper said.
Following a $5.3 million project that put in about 24 miles of cables, construction is set to begin on new $9 million and a $7 million projects on the Interstate, the paper said.
