Calif. Eyes New Emissions Regs for Trucking, Ports

Details Not Offered in Initial Outline

California regulators proposed new emissions rules for the state’s ports and the trucking industry, designed to begin compliance with ambitious “greenhouse gas” emissions reduction law, the Contra Costa Times reported Friday.

The rules, set to take effect in 2010, are among the first steps the state plans to take under AB 32, the far-reaching global warming legislation that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) signed into law last year.

The measures released Thursday by the California Air Resources Board represent just a small part of the reductions needed to reach the law’s targets — roughly 25% cuts by 2020, the paper reported.

CARB released only one-line summaries of the rules, and specific regulations that would take effect in 2010 will follow in the coming months, the agency said.

There was not much reaction from trucking and other affected industries, which also include the state’s semiconductor manufacturers, in part because few details were released, the Times said.
