Canada Considering EOBR Standard

A Canadian government panel has asked the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators to develop a federal standard for use of electronic onboard recorders, the Canadian Trucking Alliance said.

CTA had originally asked federal and provincial governments in 2004 to adopt an EOBR mandate. Transport Canada released a paper in 2006 that found that EOBRs could contribute to safety improvements and improve compliance, among other benefits, CTA said Monday.

But Canadian officials decided to wait to see how officials in the United States would rule on EOBRs. The ruling still has not happened, but such a ruling is “likely,” the trucking group said.

The panel that asked for the standard is known as the Council of Deputy Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety.

The deputy ministers’ recent directive came as a result of a February push from CTA saying that a North American EOBR mandate is “inevitable,” and that Canada should take a more active role in the process, CTA said.
