Canadian Drivers Offered Tools For Fuel, Maintenance Smarts

For truckers who want to conserve fuel and economize on their bottom line, Natural Resources Canada has come up with a couple of “smart” ideas that officials claim are both practical and effective.

FleetSmart and SmartDriver are, according to NRC Assistant Director Bob Smith, two simple programs that provide fleets and drivers with solid, real-world advice and directions for saving fuel and reducing the wear and tear on trucks.

“The learning curve is incredible compared to some guy just telling them about shifting and idling,” says Smith. “We have good feedback from driving schools and fleet managers.”

Smith recruited 40 carriers to help his agency develop the Fleet-Smart program. He says his research provides many suggestions for both fleet managers and for drivers, and has the data show the effectiveness of those suggestions.
