Canadian Firms to Recycle Old Trucks

A Volvo truck dealership and a vehicle recycling company in Toronto are building the first of several plants designed to fully recycle worn-out and wrecked trucks.

The truck recycling factory is scheduled to open in July in Toronto, with more locations planned across Canada, opening over the next year.

“I think it is something that in the long run will be coming [all over],” said Andries Mellema, president of Volvo Trucks of Toronto. “We cannot continue to dump wrecks in landfills. When a truck is wrecked or written off, there are still a lot of parts left on it that can be used.”

There are, he said, “huge benefits from the environmental point of view, but this is also commercially viable.”
