Canadian Postal Strike Continues

Canada’s postal strike continued over the weekend, with workers in Montreal going out on strike Sunday night, which could affect the entire province of Quebec, the Canadian Press reported Monday.

Despite continuing rolling strikes, Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said face-to-face negotiations continued through the weekend and were to continue Monday, the Canadian Press said.

This action follows strikes by employees in Winnipeg who walked out Thursday night, and Hamilton, Ontario, who went on strike Friday night for 48 hours, the Montreal Gazette reported.

A Canada Post official told the Canadian Press the post office will keep mail moving and that the union was not being realistic about declining mail volumes and increasing competition.

Canada Post said wage cuts and other measures are necessary for it to cope with reduced mail volume and a C$3-billion pension shortfall, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.
