Canadian Truckers Oppose Biodiesel Mandates

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is asking that its federal government abandon a plan to adopt a 2% biodiesel mandate for all diesel fuel sold in the country.

According to a study the government did on its proposed mandate, the cost of such a 2% rule would be five times greater than the benefit, CTA said Friday.

The study was carried out by a consultant for Environment Canada, the country’s counterpart to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

There would be environmental benefits to mandating a biodiesel blend in trucking’s main fuel, said the study, a copy of which was obtained by Transport Topics.

However, costs associated with production of the new fuel blend would be passed onto retail customers, the study said.

In 2006, the Canadian government announced that it intended, between 2010 and 2012, to create a national 2% biodiesel mandate.
