The Canadian trucking industry lost 3,300 jobs in April, making it the third-worst industry in the country for that month, Statistics Canada reported.
April was the first month in which job losses in the service sector outpaced those in the goods sector, the Canadian government agency reported.
Trucking trailed universities and the food-service industry in job losses, and total non-farm employment fell by 51,400.
“This is a further indication that the trucking industry is still playing catch-up in terms of capacity reduction,” said David Bradley, chief executive officer of the Canadian Trucking Alliance.
“Capacity will inevitably and eventually adjust to the market and when that time comes, some of the downward pressure on freight rates should abate,” Bradley said in a statement Thursday.
