Central Freight Lines agreed to purchase the assets of Vecta Transportation Systems, a California-based less-than-truckload carrier.
Vecta had revenue of $35 million in 1998 and operated 11 terminals in California, Nevada and Arizona. The family-owned company is headed by John Scannell Jr., who will remain active in the business, according to a spokesman for Vecta.
The move further expands Central Freight’s coverage in the West. In June, the company purchased Jaguar Fast Freight of Phoenix, bolstering its intrastate coverage in Arizona.
“Our customers have told us they want our services in the Western states,” said Tom Morehouse, senior vice president of marketing for Central Freight in Waco, Texas.
The Vecta acquisition is expected to close in late August.
